Our aims

Quantifiable quality

Fine Merino wool from the Darkan Ram Breeding Co-operative

We aim to engage our members and collaboratively breed sheep suited to mixed farming systems in the high and medium rainfall zones of WA.

Progeny from our sheep will lead the industry in early growth and maturity, adult clean fleece weight, fertility and reduced breech cover as the industry moves away from mulesing. Our rams are selected and measured under commercial conditions with special attention paid to easy care traits such as wrinkle, horns, dags, fly strike resistance, wool on face and points, and fleece rot resistance.

The breeding committee has taken advice from a geneticist and from consultants to form a view of the future of the merino in WA, and settle on 10 year objectives for the co-operative. Our view is that a fertile, early maturing, high wool cutting merino with a bare breech is the ideal sheep for mixed farming enterprises. It will be best used in commercial merino systems where wool cut and early wether turn-off is essential, and in prime lamb systems where a heavy cutting, fertile ewe will be partnered with a terminal sire to produce early maturing lambs.
